inscribed and dated Bedford 1714; oil on canvas; 127 BY 102CM; This fine portrait of John Harvey (1667-1721) is inscribed ‘Johannes Harvey/Armi./De/Ickwell Bury/Com. Bedford’; it was possibly commissioned to mark the sitter’s election to Parliament as Member for Bedfordshire in 1713. The work is in the manner of Sir Godfrey Kneller, and is possibly from the artist’s immediate circle; a portrait of John Harvey’s son and namesake by Kneller’s pupil and protégé John Vanderbank is held in the British Government Art Collection
