1927 ESSEX SUPER SIX SPEEDABOUT BOAT-TAIL ROADSTER
1927 ESSEX SUPER SIX SPEEDABOUT BOAT-TAIL ROADSTEREstimate $35,000 – $45,000
Towards the end of the First World War the management of the very successful Hudson Motor Co of Detroit was concerned with the threat made into the lower-priced market by makers such as Chevrolet and Ford and decided to build a new car under the Essex brand and a new Company was formed. The first model, the Essex Four, was low-priced and offered well above average performance. These cars were very popular in Australia and the new car out-sold the products of the Hudson parent company.
In 1924 the four-cylinder car gave way to a new six-cylinder of modest dimensions, 2130cc, later increased to 2370cc. By 1929, Essex was third after Ford and Chevrolet in sales, nearly 28,000 being sold in that year. As far as can be ascertained, this example is an original version of this rare model. The standard catalogue of American Cars does not quote model numbers or numbers made. The Speedabout was not manufactured in 1928, but in 1929 it reappeared with only 5 examples being made; they were bodied by the famous American coachbuilders Biddle & Smart to gauge public interest in a production model.
Described as in very good condition in all respects, this car represents an unusual opportunity for the Hudson Essex Terraplane enthusiast.
