1966 ROLLS-ROYCE SILVER SHADOW 2 DOOR SALOON BY H.J MULLINER, PARK WARDEstimate $42,000 – $46,000
FORMERLY THE PROPERTY OF PETER SELLERS
The Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow and its Bentley equivalent, the Bentley T were introduced in 1965 and marked a completely new change from the earlier Silver Cloud and Bentley S-Series. It marked the beginning of monocoque construction and embodied such innovation as disc brakes and a new suspension system based on Citroen patents.
The new car was lower and more compact than the earlier cars though the 6.2 Litre V8 engine was retained with some modifications. A two door version was soon available and this particular car was ordered by the Rolls-Royce concessionaries H.A. Fox & Co of London, and delivered to Mr Peter Sellers, the famous film star and member of The Goons, a very popular BBC radio show. It was specified in Metallic Red with beige leather, the colour scheme it retains today. Factory options include air-conditioning and the car’s suspension has also been upgraded with a handling kit.
Imported into Australia in the 1970s, the car was acquired in 1976 by Mr Robert McDermot who undertook a complete refurbishment of the car before it was sold to a Mr Fred Olver of Melbourne with a recorded mileage of 63,119 miles in 1984.
A detailed history of the car appeared in Praeclarum magazine, a copy of which can be sent to intending purchasers and which contains some amusing excerpts from Spike Milligan’s book “Scunthorpe Revisited” concerning the car.
Being one of only approximately 500 made, this car has covered only 40,000 miles in the last 25 years and has won the South Australian Rolls-Royce Owners Club Concours. The motor car has been meticulously maintained, primarily by ‘McDermotts’.
